ALBANY, TEX. -- The 2022 Region 7 AFTCA Amateur All-Age Championship was held January 28-29 at the Crooked Tree Ranch between Abilene and Albany, Tex.

This beautiful ranch is lightly grazed rolling prairie with scattered mesquite. It is located in the blackland prairie that stretches from the Texas Gulf Coast up through the central United States to Canada. Dogs that run in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas can run these grounds with a familiarity to their home grounds. The quarry they seek is the bobwhite quail. This year, the bobwhite quail are scarce in West Texas, and the humidity during the trial was below 20%, which made scenting conditions difficult. We did ride up two healthy coveys during the trial.

Many thanks to the Hughes family for allowing us to run this Championship on such worthy grounds, with six one-hour courses. Trialers and dogs go all day without seeing the same country.

Judges for this year's event were Adrian Jackson of Boys Ranch, Tex., and Everett Brannon of Powderly, Tex. We thank both of these fine men who are very knowledgeable and gave the utmost attention to judging this venue.

As is our tradition, our "Judges' Dinner" was held on Friday evening at the Ice House in Albany, Tex. The dinner was attended by almost everyone and great food and good conversation made for a pleasant, relaxing evening.

Fifteen dogs completed in the Championship but no birds were pointed. The Championship reverted to a Classic and the judges named three placements.

The M. G. Perkins Amateur All-Age Derby Classic followed with an entry of nine dogs. This Derby was full of very nice young dogs that we look forward to seeing in championships in future years.

Many thanks to all those who attended. And thanks, also, to Purina for once again sponsoring the event. We couldn't do this without their support.

Albany, Tex., January 28

Judges: Everett Brannan and Adrian Jackson
