Event: Cecil Proctor Open All-Age
Result: Oil Capital Field Trial Club

Location: Inola, Oklahoma

Post Date: May 3, 2023

Submitted By: Kristy Oxendine

The Cecil Proctor Open All-Age began the morning of Monday, March 6, on the heels of the very successful Region 8 Open All-Age, where the winner had turned in a five-find performance. Expectations were high for this trial.

Our new practice of putting out birds each morning in multiple places across all three one-hour courses is making for a quality event for all participants. A big thank you goes out to Oil Capital workers, particularly Steve Burris, our bird planter, for all his fine efforts. Mike Griffin handled the dog wagon with his usual flawless effort.

We want to thank Kay Ingersoll, her family, and the ranch crew for allowing us to hold this event on this legendary ranch again. Much-needed rain had fallen the previous week, and the country was wet to the point of muddy in places, but with that came better scenting conditions.

Another big "Thank you" is extended to Nestl Purina for their continued support and to Greg Blair for all he does to help us.

Well-known and respected judges this year were Everett Brannon of Texas and Doug Meyer of Kansas. Doug stepped in at the last minute when one judge had to cancel due to medical reasons. They had tough decisions as 13 of the 17 entries had multiple finds. Their decisions were well thought out and applauded. We all "thank you," gentlemen.

The winner emerged in brace No. 5 as Andy Daugherty piloted Westfall's Wheels Up to a three-find and one-back performance. Both dogs started strongly, with Texas Wild Ace (Vincent) having the first find at 16, with Wheels Up backing. A definite postcard picture moment as both dogs stood beautifully. Wheels Up went on to finds at 28, 33, and 49. His finish was forward as he moved up the rise heading to the top. Owner Bill Westfall was on hand to watch.

Barshoe Forget Me Not got the stake off to a bang-up start in brace No. 1 to garner second for Allen Vincent and owner Bob Gum. Forget Me Not was strong on the ground throughout the hour and found birds at 9 and 13. Then was found by scout pointed at 42 and was later found by Allen to the front at 60 after a short absence.

The team of Andy and Bill was back in the winners' circle again as Westfall's Mandalay won third with a workman-like performance and finds at 11, 46, and 60; the find at 60 cemented the deal.

This was a fun trial to attend and participate in. Good dogs, many birds, good food, good people, and good weather make for a great trial. Thank you all!
