The Kansas Red Setter Field Trial Club hosted the Kansas Open Derby and Open Puppy Classics at the Radcliff Ranch again this year with the help of the Wichita Bird Dog Club. This kicked off the forty-seven year of running trials on these beautiful grounds.
This year's event commenced on Friday, March 17, and concluded on Sunday, March 19, 2023, with thirty-nine entries with owners and handlers from four states. Thank you all for your entries. I wish to thank all the Judges and workers who helped put on this trial. The all-Age stake and the Open Derby Classic were judged by Ed Berendzen and Nathan Berendzen of Higbee, Missouri. The Open Shooting Dog was judged by Dr. Richard Steckley of Wichita, Kan., and Jay Lewis from Ashland, Mo., and the Open Puppy Classic was judged by Rhonda Shepherd of Savonburg, Kan., and Frank Schoenborn of Wichita, Kan.
Thanks to all six judges for their expertise and well received decisions. Thanks for all the help from the Wichita Bird Dog /Club members, Frank Schoenborn, who picked up and planted the quail each morning and picked up the dog food from Nutri Source, who sponsored us again this year with the Ad and dog food for the winners. Thanks to Bob Lais, Paul Ott, Klaus Schmidt and Gregg Gibson for help around camp opening and closing gates and marshalling and also to the handlers for their help. In addition, thanks Linda Beauchamp for preparing the excellent daily lunches and the banquet supper.
The All-Age began Friday morning with 25-degree temperature which increased to 50 degrees by mid-afternoon. Ten pieces of bird work including two wild coveys happened in the first morning. Nemaha Tap Water, a pointer male owned and handled by Dr. Pat McInteer of Falls City, Neb., won first place with a big forward race and excellent bird work. Mac's Big Mac Daddy, handled by Justin Crook of Jasper, Mo., and owned by Jim Corpening of Topeka, Kan., had two finds and a nice race to win second place. Third place went to Bocomo Dutchman, owned and handled by Jay Lewis "Duke" had a good find and nice race.
The Open Derby Classic ran Friday afternoon in 50-degree temperatures with the bird contacts declining. The first brace produced the first and third placements. Dr. Pat McInteer, who owns and handled Nemaha Touch A Grey, pointer male, won 1st place in the Open Derby Classic with a good find and race. This win included the first win of the Don Beauchamp Derby Classic rotating trophy, the beautiful trophy made by the Wichita Bird Dog Club and donated to Don for this event.
Second place went to Flint Ridge Ghost Buster, a pointer male who had a nice forward race and is owned by Andy Neria of Savonburg, Kan., and handled by Justin Crook.
Third place was awarded to Silent Assassin; a pointer male who was braced with the winner, "Tucker" is owned by Bill Osborne of Inola, Okla., and was handled by Ryan Eichelberger of Chelsea, Okla., with a nice race and a back.
The Open Shooting Dog began Saturday morning with a cold northwest wind and a temperature of 21 degrees which increased to 36 degrees in mid-afternoon, however it did not affect the bird work, all three dogs that placed each had three finds. 1st place was won by Touch's Micro Dot, a pointer female owned and handled by Sonny Clark of Wichita, Kan.; she had three finds and a back. 2nd place was, Unfinished Business, a pointer male owned by John Gaines of Broken Arrow, Okla. and handled by Justin Crook, "Ace" had three finds, with one being on a wild covey. Third place went to Nemaha Magic Marker, a pointer male owned and handled by Dr. Pat McInteer. He had three finds and one unproductive.
The Open Puppy Classic ran Sunday afternoon; the temperature started at 9 degrees in the morning and gradually warmed up during the afternoon. The puppies ran on one course out and back from camp. No birds were pointed in this stake. All three placements were based on race. First place was won by Flint Ridge Marco Polo, a pointer male, owned and handled by Paul Ott, of Andover, Kan. Second place was Keshia, a pointer female, owned and handled by Andy Neria and third place went to Flint Ridge Black Jack, a pointer male also owned by and handled by Paul Ott.
We had a very successful field trial, thanks to everyone for their participation and help. Hope you will all be here again next year.
