The Venango spring Open Puppy and Open Derby ran in conjunction with the Ontario Grouse Championship, which the Venango Grouse Trial Club hosted.

Judges for the Open Puppy were Brian Ralph of Sandy Lake, Pa., and Bob Smith of Clinton, N. C.

The Open Derby was judged by the longtime veterans of the grouse woods, the duo of Dr. Timothy Perschke, Butler, Pa., and Gerry Mercatoris, Brookville, Pa.

In the Derby, Parkway, a pointer male, was the first-place winner, besting a field of 15 others by laying down a blistering race in the last brace of the day. Parker is owned by Mark Hughes and was handled by Mark. Pretty Boy Leo, a pointer male owned by Ted Mappas of Staten Island, N. Y., and handled by Mark Hughes, ran in brace No. 2 and stayed in the winners' circle by being front running and hitting all the right objectives. Third place went to a fancy setter, Sam. He ran in brace No. 6 and is owned by Scott Johnson of Trufant, Mich., and was handled by Scott Forman. The judges noted that there was a lot of talent in the stake.

The Venango Puppy Classic saw this year's blue ribbon go to Grey Eagle Molly, a classy and fancy moving setter female owned and handled by William Drawl. Grey Eagle, hot off a win at the Nittany Valley field trial, came back to show that she meant business. The red ribbon went to Grouse Hill Princess, a gracious moving, front-running, and stylish setter owned by John Capocci and handled by Christy Helms. Shady Hills Zeeva garnered the yellow by staying forward and looking good at it.

As always, the Venango Club would like to thank all that made the trial a success, and to our sponsor, Purina and Greg Blair, a special thank you for allowing us to live this dream of field trialing.
